Based in San Jose, Chris J Nicklin is a wedding musician and DJ who brings live guitar and real dance-floor energy to weddings across the Bay Area, Napa, and beyond, traveling throughout California and the US. Known for reimagining pop hits with soulful artistry, he brings a Master’s in Classical Guitar, a background as a college music professor, and more than a decade of performing to every celebration. Along the way, he has appeared on CBS and provided music for Grammy-winning artists, Hollywood celebrities, and Fortune 500 companies.

Chris started his business as a musician after one too many front-row seats to DJs with failing gear, no backup plan, awkward MCing, and lazy transitions that ignored the room and cleared the dance floor. His answer is a musician’s ear at the DJ booth, and a wedding day that feels easy, intentional, and unmistakably the couple’s own.

The party starts way before the dance floor. During the ceremony and cocktail hour, Chris plays live guitar and roams through the crowd, so guests are serenaded in motion while their favorite songs set the atmosphere for every conversation. Once the lights dim, that same artist steps behind the decks, filling the room with the couple’s favorite tracks, and still jumps out with the guitar for those electric, hands-in-the-air moments. It’s live performance and DJ energy in one seamless experience, with one less vendor to coordinate.

As a wedding DJ, Chris crafts the soundtrack in real time, tuned to the guests’ energy, from the warmth of dinner conversations to the exhilaration of a packed dance floor. His mixes move across open format, hip hop, 2000s alt and pop, and Latin. It isn’t just a playlist. It’s a live, evolving set that turns moments into memories guests can’t stop talking about.

He also takes care of the MCing, smooth and confident, guiding grand entrances, toasts, and the opening of the dance floor without ever stealing the spotlight. Lighting design rounds it out, with soft hues during toasts, vibrant bursts during dancing, and scenes that make every photo glow.

Before the wedding, Chris builds a custom game plan with each couple, so nothing is left to guesswork, sonically or logistically. Couples typically meet with him three to four weeks out, then again a few days before the wedding for a final event overview, and song requests, names, and notes all live in one event app. He’s happy to learn new songs on request, brings quality equipment and microphones with backups on hand, and has a trusted network of DJs and musicians ready to step in if ever needed. Couples can book him as a wedding guitarist only, a DJ only, or both.

From his San Jose base, Chris has played celebrations at Villa Montalvo in Saratoga and the Mill Rose Inn in Half Moon Bay. He serves San Francisco, Napa, Aptos, and Paso Robles, and travels throughout California.
